Ian Minty from South Africa sent us several pictures of the McDonald grandfather clock that he recently built.

Tips on finishing your Grandfather Clock Kit.

The most important step in creating a beautiful finish for your grandfather clock is proper surface preparation.

When preparing the solid wood of your clock case for staining and sealing, it's best to use aluminum oxide sandpaper... available at most hardware stores and home centers. Sand with a fine grade paper. Stroking in long, straight lines with the grain will bring out the natural color of the wood. After sanding, clean the surface with a tack cloth or a cloth dampened with mineral spirits. With careful preparation, the wood in your grandfather clock will shine under a professional looking stain or clear finish. We could provide more information but instead suggest that you check out the resources at Minwax... they are experts in creating furniture grade finishes.

About grandfather clock moondials

Grandfather clocks featuring moondials first came into being in the early 18th century. As arched dial clocks became more popular, the moon phase disc increased in size to about 9 inches. diameter. Typical moon phase discs have 4 small paintings on it. A full moon occurs every 29 1/2 days, after which time,the moon which started at the top of the dial will be at the bottom and vice versa.
